Imagine a teddy bear something like this:
Now imagine a class project where the kids had to vote to name the teddy bear. Cute innocent stuff, hmm?
Well, unless its the Sudan and the kids like the name “Muhammed“. A British teacher was just convicted of “insulting Islam” there and sentenced to 15 days in prison to be followed by deportation; this is apparently a ‘light’ sentence for such a ‘crime’; “Under Sudanese law, she could have spent six months behind bars and received 40 lashes.” It could be worse though…
Hundreds of demonstrators in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, poured into the streets on Friday demanding the execution of a British teacher who was convicted of insulting Islam because her class of 7-year-olds named a teddy bear Muhammad. The protesters, some carrying swords, screamed, “Shame, shame on the U.K.!” and, “Kill her, kill her by firing squad.”
‘Insulting Religion’ is apparently a great way to suppress criticism too; in the more ‘liberal’ nation of Turkey, publishers of Richard Dawkins’ book “The God Delusion” are under suspicion of such.
And right-wing Christians in the US wonder why those of us who don’t ascribe to their beliefs are in mortal terror of them taking over?
Here’s a little video you might want to watch by someone who would be described as BAAWA (“Bad Assed Atheist With Attitude” ;) on alt.atheism; a choice quote:
Obviously I’d like to show more respect to people’s sincerely held beliefs. Of course I would. But unfortunately that would violate my own sincerely held belief that religion is a filthy lie and a threat to civilization, so you can see the problem I’ve got with that.
(tip of the hat to Pharyngula for the neat vid ;)
