A Half Billion Firefox Downloads!

Firefox just passed 500M downloads and while not equal to users, its still proportional (on the order of 30% for ~150M users) An even better sign: the time it took to get to 500M from 250M (~15 months) is significantly less than from 0 to 250M (~24 months). Just a back-of-the-envelope calculation… could we be looking at 1 Billion Firefox downloads (~300M users and doubled market share) by mid-2009? :)

And speaking of market share, good luck trying to figure out exactly what it is ;) Each of the big companies are looking at the web from a different angle. Nailing down Jello is a good description for trying to pick the right numbers ;) An example:

OneStat estimates the global Firefox market share at around 14%
W3Counter estimates the global Firefox market share at around 28%

Contrast also Onestat’s European Firefox numbers (lower) to XitiMonitor’s Numbers (higher), e.g.:

Germany: 27% / 34%
France: 15% / 26%
UK: 12% / 17%

However, the trends are clear: Firefox is still gaining market share and IE is still losing it. And that’s something I hope to continue to see for quite some time :)
